IELTS Writing - Task 1 - Diagram (The water cycle) | IELTS PREPARATION

Thursday, March 16, 2023

The diagram below shows the water cycle, which is the process by which water evaporates from the Earth's surface and is returned to it through precipitation. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Model Answer:

The diagram illustrates the stages of the water cycle, a process in which water evaporates from the Earth's surface, rises into the atmosphere, and falls back to the Earth's surface as precipitation.

At the first stage of the water cycle, the sun's heat causes water to evaporate from oceans, lakes, and rivers. This water vapor then rises into the atmosphere and forms clouds through the process of condensation. At the third stage, precipitation occurs when the cloud droplets become too heavy to stay in the atmosphere and fall to the Earth's surface. Precipitation can take the form of rain, snow, or hail.

After precipitation, water can take different paths. Some of it can run off the Earth's surface and enter rivers and oceans through surface runoff. Some of it can seep into the ground and replenish groundwater through infiltration. Groundwater can then flow underground and eventually discharge into streams, lakes, and oceans.

Overall, the water cycle is a continuous process that ensures the availability of water for life on Earth.
