The chart below shows the percentage of household income spent on different items in a typical family budget in the United States in 2020.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the chart below. You should write at least 150 words.

The chart illustrates the proportion of household income spent on different categories of expenses in a typical family budget in the United States in 2020. The categories include housing, transportation, food, healthcare, and other expenses.

Housing was the largest expense for a typical family, accounting for 35% of their budget. This was followed by transportation, which took up 17% of the budget. Food was the third largest expense, accounting for 12% of the budget, while healthcare and other expenses accounted for 8% and 28% respectively.

It is noteworthy that transportation and healthcare expenses remained relatively stable across different income brackets, whereas housing and food expenses varied significantly. For example, families in the lowest income bracket spent 43% of their budget on housing, while families in the highest income bracket spent only 24% on housing. Similarly, families in the lowest income bracket spent 18% of their budget on food, while families in the highest income bracket spent only 7%.

In conclusion, housing, transportation, and food were the three largest expenses in a typical family budget in the United States in 2020, with housing being the largest. The proportion of expenses varied significantly across different income brackets.
